Our friend and fellow Mission-based creative, Susan Hoff, is an impressive one-stop shop for design and manufacturing. Her company, Susan Hoff Collections makes hand crafted tote bags, purses, and clothing out of reclaimed sailcloth and horse tack. Even more impressively, this resourceful and creative company has a work force of…just one! That’s right, Susan does all the drafting, pattern cutting, and sewing for each of her products herself.
Inspired by a youth spent horseback riding on her family farm in Illinois and by her job leading Outward Bound sailing expeditions in Maine, Susan’s bags fuse together components of two of her long time passions. Her labor intensive process is also inherently sustainable as the materials used to construct her products come from used or discarded sails and horse reigns. The sailcloth is reclaimed from ships and seaports along the California coast and the leather is sourced from spent horse tack collected from ranches around the country.
